The incidence of skin cancer has been increasing at an alarming rate over the past several decades. While there are many factors involved in the onset of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers, overexposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) has clearly been identified as an important factor.
To reach a UV protection factor (UPF) of 50+ in polyester and other polymer based garments is advisable to grant sufficient protection with embedded nano materials. However, the UPF of a fabric is also influenced by fabric properties. The complexity of interaction between these properties makes it impossible to predict the UPF or to generalize comparison. Thus, final testing is always necessary.
To conquer both the protection against UV exposure and the inferior UV resistance of fibers is managed with a mix of additives in polymers and/or proper fabric construction in textiles. In polymers, UV irradiation largely depend on the loading of UV resistant (filtering) nanoparticles. A in vitro method for the determination of the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is described in a European Standard and is referred to as per EN 13758. Reliable testing occurs in wavelength ranges of 290–400 nm.

To increase UV resistance, titanium dioxide and some other minerals (ZnO) and also organic nano materials are the natural choice. Nano-TiO2 with addition values lower than 3% improves the UV aging resistance performance of fibers, while the aging resistance are seriously reduced if values were well over 5%.
